Transitioning to Natural Deodorant: Why Do Some Experience an Adjustment Period?

Part 1: Understanding the Transition

Switching for a Safer Choice

Making the switch from conventional antiperspirants or commercial deodorants to a natural alternative is a unique journey for each individual. Despite the desire to embrace safer ingredients, many find it challenging to part with their familiar products. Questions about effectiveness, odor reduction, and sweating often loom large.

Part 1 explores the adjustment period and potential causes of irritation or rashes during the transition.

The Personal Journey

As I began to have children I became very uncomfortable when they were so young to apply mainstream deodorant to their little bodies with all of those chemicals.

We tried many of the natural deodorants that were available but they were not only ineffective. Since deodorants are formulated to be used daily and some ingredient components may be absorbed into the skin, I was determined to formulate a safe, effective natural deodorant that worked.

Sweat itself is almost odorless, it is the bacteria feeding on the sweat that causes the odor. Our aRMPIT dEODORANT formulas use ingredients with natural antibacterial properties to help combat odor and organic ingredients like nEEM and dISTILLED wHOLE gRAIN aLCOHOL, cOLLOIDAL sILVER, mAGNESIUM or natural clay to help absorb perspiration.

I will not get into all of the “evils” of the ingredients in commercial deodorants or antiperspirants--because we really don't understand many of these chemicals or know their long-term effects!

But when I began researching many of the ingredients found in some conventional deodorants (phthalates, fragrances, and parabens), I knew I could not continue to use them or apply them to my children’s underarms.

It took me years of research, experimentation, and testing on friends, family, and our uRBAN wHIPPERS cREW, before I finally came up with aRMPIT deodorant formulas that we all loved.

We formulate our deodorants to help control odor, absorb perspiration, and treat your skin with healthy ingredients.

Understanding the Adjustment Period

The human body tends to resist change, especially after years of using commercial deodorants with synthetic chemicals. The transition involves more than just switching products; it's a journey for the body to re-regulate itself.

What Causes An Armpit Adjustment Period?

  1. Underarm Skin Sensitivity:

    • Thinner skin prone to allergic reactions.
    • Limited exposure to external elements, making it more sensitive.
    • Moist environment ideal for bacterial growth.
  2. Body Chemistry Shift:

    • Commercial deodorants alter body chemistry.
    • Antiperspirants contain aluminum salts, affecting sweat glands.
    • Microbiome in the armpit must readjust after antiperspirant use.

Do I Need An Armpit Detox?

  • Armpit "detox" is a normal adjustment period, not a need for detox kits.
  • The microbiome in the armpit changes after stopping antiperspirant use.
  • Natural detox processes do not require external interventions.

What To Expect If You Have a Natural Deodorant Transition Period

Week 1:

  • Initial cessation of commercial deodorant use.
  • Little difference noticed, potential satisfaction with natural deodorant.

Week 2:

  • Bacterial populations in the armpit begin to change.
  • Temporary increase in underarm odor and sweating.
  • Misinterpretation may lead to discontinuation of natural deodorant.

Week 3:

  • Ongoing changes in bacterial communities.
  • Odor issues decrease, perspiration levels normalize.

Week 4:

  • Natural armpit microbiome is restored.
  • Full adjustment to natural deodorant achieved.

Other Possible Causes of Irritation

Baking Soda:

  • pH differences between sweat and baking soda.
  • Sensitivity varies; some may experience irritation, while others do not.

Deodorant Application:

  • Natural deodorant textures differ from conventional products.
  • Proper application techniques reduce chances of irritation.

Sweat Chafing:

  • Friction due to increased moisture after stopping antiperspirants.
  • Armpit chafing and irritation explained.

Shaving Irritation:

  • Microscopic tears caused by shaving.
  • Applying deodorant immediately after shaving can lead to discomfort.

Rashes:

  • Different types explained: Intertrigo, Prickly Heat, Contact Dermatitis.
  • Symptoms, causes, and preventive measures outlined.

Conclusion: Part 1

Transitioning to natural deodorant is a personalized experience with varied outcomes. While some encounter no adjustment period, others may face temporary increases in sweat and odor. It is crucial to differentiate between normal reactions and signs of incompatibility.

Part 2 will offer solutions and answers to common questions, guiding individuals through potential challenges in their switch to natural deodorant.
