pLANTAIN fRUITs are a member of the genus Musa, a family of plants that also includes the much-loved banana. They are a major staple in West and Central Africa and the Caribbean Islands and are regularly used in both cooking and creating skincare products. Plantains are starchy, tough and not very sweet. You will need to cook plantains before you eat them, as they don’t taste good when they’re raw, but having them as part of your diet or skincare routine can help you to boost both your internal and external health
This fruit hails from the same family as the banana, and is packed with the benefits of Vitamins A and C. While Vitamin A plays a role in the growth of skin cells and skin health, Vitamin C is also an antioxidant which can encourage healthy, rejuvenated skin. As well, this vitamin can help to counteract the effects of free radical damage to the skin.
pLANTAIN lEAF has the distinction of being a weed. However, plantain has historically been used not only as food but also as a healing herb in numerous cultures around the world. Native Americans traditionally used this plant to treat wounds and fevers as well as to draw out toxins from stings and bites.
There are two types of plantains and often you’ll find both while foraging as they do often grow together in the same area. The plantains with broad leaves are called Plantago major while the other narrow-leaved plantains are called P. lanceolata. Both have similar properties for medicinal and herbal usage, however many herbalists prefer the broadleaf plantain for its larger and softer, edible leaves.
Plantain leaf have anti-inflammatory, analgesic and anti-microbial properties. Because of this plantain is well suited to soothe insect bites and superficial wounds in addition to promoting healing. It also contains allantoin which is used to help with skin regeneration making it an excellent component in formulations created to help reduce the appearance of scars.
In soap making, the term “bastille,” commonly refers to cold process soap made with at least 70% olive oil. Olive oil is extremely gentle, making it the perfect oil for delicate or sensitive skin. This Bastille Soap Bar is comprised of olive oil and a small amount of coconut oil for cleansing properties. This recipe also uses luxurious and moisturizing milks. pLANTAIN puree which is known for its antioxidant properties, is added to give the soap a soft natural color. All these skin-loving and gentle ingredients make this a wonderfully nourishing bar of soap
These Soap Bars are naturally scented and contain no fragrance oils.
